New York Times article touts SafeRoadMaps.org

“While most travel occurs in urban areas, there are more fatalities in rural areas,” said Thomas A. Horan, research director at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Excellence in Rural Safety.

The center recently updated its national Web site, SafeRoadMaps.org, to improve identification of rural areas with the most driving fatalities. The goal is to help drivers identify the most dangerous portions of their trips so that they can make safe and informed decisions, and to alert transportation policy makers to areas where improvements are needed. SafeRoadMaps was developed out of the Center for Excellence in Rural Safety (CERS), which is based at the University of Minnesota and is directed by Lee Munich, Jr. Thomas A. Horan, Ph.D., is the CERS Research Director and he provides policy and research guidance for SafeRoadMaps. The SafeRoadMaps Project Director is Brian N. Hilton, Ph.D., and he has overall responsibility for the architectural, technical, and web development of SafeRoadMaps. Several colleagues, including Benjamin Schooley, Ph.D., Warren Roberts, Peter Liu, and Rondalynne McClintock have assisted Drs. Horan and Hilton.
